My little budding readers | ONE Blog Circle | Kalamazoo Lifestyle Photographer

Did you know that the month of March is reading month?! Celebrating reading month is a big deal at our school.  The kids get to come to school dressed in different themes the first week in March to kick off the reading fun. We will celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday tomorrow by eating green eggs and ham.  My children’s teachers don’t currently give homework, except to read for 20 minutes a night.  While my husband may be the fun parent who love to watch movies, play cars and kick the soccer ball around the yard, my kids know that I am the one who loves to read with them.  They love to climb in our bed to read (the only time they are ever allowed in my bed unless my camera is out!), we make blanket forts to read in, we turn off the lights and read with a flash light, anything we can think of to make it even more fun than it already is.

This image is incredibly special to me because it’s one of the few images I have of myself with all of my children, AND we are doing something together that we enjoy! Isaac struggled with reading at first, but has recently improved so much and grown to truly love it.  Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Dogman are some of our favorites! (Ahem… ok, they are his favorites- not mine, but whatever gets him reading…)

Make sure to celebrate reading month in your home, and all year round by reading with your children for at least 20 minutes a day!

Need some additional reasons to read to your child?

  1. It’s great quality time with your children, and a chance to get them to sit still for a snuggle or two!
  2. It improves their attention span.
  3. It helps expand their vocabulary.
  4. Children become better readers and grow their interest in reading, when read to aloud.
  5. Reading aloud to a child aids in the development of their imagination.
  6. Every teacher will thank you!
